In 2012, Jennie Alexander & I finally finished our book Make a Joint Stool from a Tree, published by Lost Art Press. In it we outline all the steps involved in making a classic seventeenth-century joined stool. I still make them as custom work. Prices start at $900. Height is usually around 22″, and the seat is about 11″ x 15″ or so. Oak. Options include carving on the upper rails, paint and turning patterns.
I sometimes make them with a carving on the upper rails (aprons) instead of the molding on the first stool.
A red oak and ash stool with squiggle & polka dot paint. yes, that’s a 17th-century decorative scheme!
